Ambient AI scribe
AI that listens to a clinical encounter and drafts a structured note automatically.
An ambient AI scribe is software that captures a clinical conversation in real time and produces a structured clinical note — typically SOAP or a specialty template — within seconds. "Ambient" means it works in the background while the clinician focuses on the patient, as opposed to dictation, where the clinician explicitly speaks the note.
The category was minor before 2023 and is now the dominant form of AI in clinical documentation. The differentiators between products are clinical precision, hallucination behaviour, EHR integration depth, language coverage, and compliance posture — not whether the tool can "do ambient" at all.
Ambient scribes are not regulated as medical devices in the US, but in the EU, software that influences clinical decisions can fall under EU MDR Rule 11. Most pure scribes stay outside that bracket; tools that add coding or decision support move closer to it.
